How to Pray Against Spiritual Warfare
Sep 11, 2026Summary
Have you ever wondered how to pray against spiritual warfare when heavy, unseen tension hangs over your family? When fear or conflict suddenly flares up, it is incredibly easy for our prayers to feel more like frantic venting than powerful intercession. If you are overwhelmed and desperately want to know how to pray with real authority to restore peace in your home, you are in the exact right place!
In this episode of the Arise Women of God podcast, host Tamara K. Anderson is joined by author and prayer warrior Kari Anjewierden to share highly practical, biblical strategies for your daily defense. We dive into the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6 to uncover why asking God to "deliver us from the evil one" is not just for emergencies, but a necessary daily petition. Tamara shares her powerful personal routine of conducting a room-by-room spiritual audit over her house, using the name of Jesus Christ to cast out darkness and create an impenetrable sphere of light.
You will also learn the beauty of Hannah's quiet, pouring-out prayer (1 Samuel 1) and how to use Kari's brilliant two-column "surrender journal" to hold two-way conversations with God. Finally, discover how persistent intercessory prayer can shatter the enemy's maximum-security deadbolts, just like the early church did for Peter in Acts 12. Tune in to stop fighting in your own strength and start praying with heaven's authority today!
Episode Takeaways
- Daily Deliverance (Matthew 6:13): "Deliver us from evil" literally translates to "deliver us from the evil one." Petitioning God for protection against adversarial entrapment is not an emergency prayer; it is a proactive daily necessity!
- The Room-by-Room Audit: You can physically walk through your home and declare Christ's peace over your doorways and bedrooms. Pray aloud or quietly in each room, casting out darkness and asking God to place an impenetrable spiritual sphere of light around your property.
- Pouring Out vs. Shouting (1 Samuel 1): When Hannah faced intense emotional bullying, she didn't scream or collapse into defeat. She poured out her raw, aching soul before the Lord. Warfare prayer does not require you to be loud; it requires you to anchor your spirit in divine peace.
- The Two-Column Surrender Journal: When you feel the urge to take the reins back from God, loosen your grip. Use a two-column journal: write your thoughts, heart, and questions on one side, and record the impressions and answers the Spirit gives you on the other.
- Shattering Deadbolts (Acts 12): When Peter was locked in a maximum-security prison, the church held an all-night prayer meeting. God sent an angel, and the heavy iron gates swung open on their own! Group intercessory prayer can shatter spiritual deadbolts for loved ones trapped in addiction or apathy.

Reflection Questions
- When faced with conflict or spiritual tension, do your prayers tend to sound more like "frantic venting" or "powerful intercession"?
- Have you ever tried doing a room-by-room prayer walk through your home? Which room in your house feels like it needs an extra declaration of Christ's peace today?
- Think of a loved one who seems completely trapped behind a "spiritual deadbolt." How does the story of Peter in Acts 12 encourage you to keep praying without ceasing?

Ordinary Women Extraordinary Faith When God calls, we say yes.
Hello and welcome back to the Arise Women of God podcast.
I'm your host, Tamara K. Anderson, and joining me today is my wonderful friend Carrie Angewerden.
Carrie is an author, speaker, mother of six, and an avid story seeker who understands the power of daily intentional prayer, and I am so thankful to have her with me as we talk about how to pray against spiritual warfare.
Here's what we're going to talk about in our episode today.
First, I'm going to share two biblical daily deliverance petition verses.
Second, Carrie will break down Matthew 26 about watching and praying and how prayer strengthens us before temptation strikes.
Third, I will share my personal routine of clearing out darkness room by room in my home.
And fourth, we'll talk about pouring out versus shouting and Hannah's quiet, agonizing prayer, as well as Carrie sharing her two column surrender journal.
Finally, we'll talk about shattering deadbolts and how the early church prayed Peter out of maximum security chain.
But let's begin with the foundational pattern of daily warfare prayer.
When Jesus taught his disciples how to pray in the Lord's Prayer, he included an essential daily defensive strategy in Matthew 6:13.
Here's what he said and Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
In the original language, that phrase literally means deliver us from the evil one.
Deliver us from adversarial entrapment is not an emergency prayer reserved only for massive crisis.
It is part of our daily bread every morning.
We have the right to petition God to actively shield our minds and our children from the schemes of the adversary.
Look at how David approached spiritual opposition in Psalm chapter 35, verses 1 through 3.
Plead my cause, O Lord, with them that strive with me Fight against them that fight against me.
Take hold of shield and buckler and stand up for mine.
Help draw out also the spear and stop the way against them that persecute me, say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.
Notice David's posture.
He handed the sword to God.
Instead of taking vengeance into his own hands or retaliating in anger, he petitioned the Lord to draw the spear, intercept the enemy on the path, and speak peace directly to his soul.
Now, that doesn't mean that we sit back passively.
There were times God told David to stand still, but there were also times God directed him to take bold physical action, like facing Goliath or confronting the Philistines.
When you pray, don't just speak.
Listen.
During and after your prayers, ask, Lord, what step do you need me to take today?
God knows the exact strategy needed for your specific battle.
Prayer is what bridges our human weakness with God's supernal power.
Let's listen to Carrie explain why.
Jesus commanded us to watch and pray in Matthew 26.
Kari Anjewierden

So we have to be asking.
And that prayer gives us that opportunity to ask those questions, those needs that we have.
And no, he's not a cosmic vending machine, but he is a God of love.
He does love us, and he wants to bless us.
So ask and ye shall receive.
Knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
Right?
In Matthew 26, it says, Watch and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
So we already come in a weakened state.
Our mortal body already wants to explore new things.
And maybe what's on God's agenda isn't always on our agenda, unfortunately.
But he's promised us, if we are watching for him, if we are praying, he will help us in those moments of temptation when the choice is really difficult, to have the strength to make the choice that will be best for us in the end.

Carrie's point about watching and asking is the key to proactive defense.
One of the most powerful ways I practice this is through a prayerful audit of my home.
Routinely, I will walk through my house room by room.
As I walk into each space, I pray aloud or quietly, asking God in the name of Jesus to sweep away any lingering darkness, contention, or heaviness in that room.
I ask God to cast out Satan and bind the adversary's influence from our home and family.
And I invite him to fill every corner with his love, light, and peace.
As I pray over each room, I ask God to place an impenetrable spiritual sphere of light around our entire home and property, maybe a divine force field against the darkness where the Holy Spirit can dwell unhindered.
And I picture it happening in my mind's eye.
Oh, My dear sister, you too can physically walk through your home and declare Christ's peace over over your doorways and bedrooms and watch as the whole spirit shifts.
Now you may be wondering, what do you do when a spiritual attack is targeting your emotions through deep grief, taunting, personal inadequacy, or negative thoughts in your mind warfare.
Prayer does not require us to be loud or shouting.
Let's look at Hannah in 1st Samuel, chapter 1, verses 6 through 18.
Year after year, Peninnah provoked Hannah bitterly to make her fret.
Because she had no children.
Hannah faced ongoing emotional bullying and spiritual discouragement because of it.
But Hannah didn't scream, trade insults, or collapse into bitter defeat.
She went to the tabernacle and poured out her soul before God in focused but weeping prayer.
Her lips moved, but no sound came out.
When Eli the priest, questioned her, Hannah said, I have poured out my soul before the Lord.
Then Eli gave her a blessing.
Go in peace and may the God of Israel give you what you have asked of him.
Scripture says Hannah got up, ate, and her countenance was no longer sad.
Pouring out your raw and aching heart at the feet of Jesus disarms the adversary's emotional hooks and anchors your spirit and divine peace.
Now let's listen as Carrie shares a practical tool that helps us surrender those heavy burdens and hold a two column conversation with God.
Kari Anjewierden

I was looking at something that talks about surrender not.
And it says because you're used to doing things alone, your instinct will be to take the reins back throughout the day, even after you've prayed right?
And when you feel that tightness or urge to handle it all yourself mentally or physically, loosen your hands and say, I'm giving this back to you, God.
I don't have to carry this alone.
And that to me is so hopeful.
I don't have to carry my heavy burdens alone.
And when I have something that is celebratory, I have somebody to celebrate with always.
I'm never alone.
And I love to keep a prayer journal.
I love to write down my questions before I pray.
I love to invite the Spirit in to help me with those questions, to know what's vital that day and who needs me and where do I need to be and what do I need to be focusing on.
And then as I go into a prayer, I'm keeping a notebook next to me so that as God, if he speaks to me, I'm writing those things down or keeping that notebook close to me throughout the day.
Because sometimes it's in the mundane task that we're doing that some of those answers come, you need a place to put those answers, whether it's on your phone, whether it's in a notebook, whatever that may be.
Right.
I like this idea of a two column conversation where you're still writing it down but on one side, one column you're writing down your heart, your thoughts, your questions and on the other side you're writing you know what is coming to your mind and your heart as you're thinking of the things that you've written.
Tamara K Anderson
00:09:07.310 - 00:11:55.090
Isn't that two column journal such a powerful way to surrender what you cannot control?
I love it when you are contending for a loved one who seems completely trapped.
Never underestimate the power of persistent intercessory prayer.
Look at Acts 12, verses 1 through 17.
King Herod had just executed James and locked Peter in a maximum security prison chained between two soldiers behind iron gates.
This was an impossible situation, but verse five records the church's counterattack.
Peter therefore was kept in prison, but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.
While believers held an all night prayer meeting, an angel illuminated the dark prison cell and the chains literally fell off Peter's wrists.
The heavy iron gate swung open on its own and Peter walked out a free man.
