Finally, learn how to fill your mind with light using Philippians 4:8. Tune in to reclaim your mental peace today!

Episode Takeaways

  • The Mental Stop Sign & Lawyer: When an intrusive thought hits (e.g., "my friend canceled lunch because she hates me"), put up a mental stop sign. Act as your own "mental lawyer" and demand to see the evidence. If there is no evidence, throw the thought out!
  • Dismissing the Accusers: Intrusive thoughts act like the loud accusers who dragged the woman before Jesus in the temple. Jesus Christ did not condemn her, and He does not condemn you for having a negative thought. You can dismiss those false accusers with the truth of God's Word.
  • Flip it and Cast it Out: If a negative thought won't leave, it is likely from the adversary. Flip the thought to find the actual truth, and then boldly cast it out by saying, "In the name of Jesus Christ, I cast out this negative thought."
  • Fill the Void with Light: Once you evict a dark thought, you must fill the empty space in your mind. Use Philippians 4:8 to focus on whatsoever things are true, honest, just, and pure so the enemy has no seat at your table.

Reflection Questions

  • When a negative thought enters your mind, do you immediately accept it as truth, or do you pause and act as a "mental lawyer" demanding evidence?
  • How can remembering the story of Jesus Christ dismissing the accusers help you silence the shame loops in your own head?
  • What is one "true, honest, or pure" thing (Philippians 4:8) you can focus on today to replace a recurring intrusive thought?

Ordinary women, extraordinary faith. When God calls, we say yes. Hello my friend and welcome back to the Arise Women of God podcast.

I'm your host, Tamara K. Andersen, and joining me today is the amazing and talented Wendy Christiansen.

Wendy is an amazing Christian counselor and licensed social worker with over 30 years of experience and she is here to give us practical faith based tools to protect our minds. Here's what you can expect to learn from our episode today.

First, the mental lawyer and the stop sign, putting a quick pause on intrusive thoughts and demanding to see the evidence. Second, dismissing the accusers, how the Savior dismantles shame spirals and reminds us of our true worth.

Third, flipping the thought and casting out. And here we're going to talk about replacing dark mental loops with Philippians 4. 8 And invoking the name of Jesus Christ.

All right, let's start by defining what an intrusive thought actually is.

Wendi Christensen

00:02:10.340 - 00:04:32.230

Intrusive thoughts can be really hard.

It's basically a thought that enters your mind that you didn't want it to be there, you don't want it to be there, and you're not quite sure what to do with it when it does come. It can be a physical thing. It can also be a spiritual thing.

The biggest thing you want to look at is when you have an intrusive thought that something you don't want to be there is to stop and to question it. And to ask Kate, is this thought mine? Could this be from the adversary? Is it?

And even you can ask, is this from God or is it from the adversary and is it really mine? Because one thing you also want to look at is the outcome of that thought.

For example, if I have a negative thought, that's like, I'm a horrible, awful person because I had an appointment with my friend to go have lunch. She canceled on me. And the first thing I think is she hates me. She doesn't like Me, she doesn't want to be around me.

She doesn't want to have anything to do with me. You need to look at those thoughts and stop them.

So the first thing I like to actually have people do is picture a stop sign in your mind to just stop for a second rather than letting it build. Stop. Look at that thought and question it. Hey, wait, wait just a minute. Do I have any evidence that that thought is true?

Is there any evidence that she actually does hate me? And if you say no, then, okay, let's look at. Because the outcome of. If I have a thought, my friend cancels. That's. That's the event, right?

She cancels lunch. I don't really know why. She doesn't give me a reason why. My first thought is, she hates me.

That's going to lead to me feeling horrible about myself, feeling heavy, feeling sad, maybe even feeling anxious.

So I'm looking at the outcome, and if you can see that the outcome of that thought is going to be a very negative one, then you definitely want to question it. So that's why we pull in the stop sign and then questioning. I kind of like to look at it as a lawyer that's on my shoulder.

And they're going to say, hey, Wendy, do you have any evidence this thought is true? If you can go, no, I don't have any evidence. Throw it out. It's no good.

And if it's from the adversary, he's going to make it even stronger and more difficult to throw it out.

So if you're having an even harder time throwing it out and you're still wanting to delve into and believe those negative thoughts, it's most definitely from the adversary. So again, throw it out.

I love that image of having a mental lawyer on your shoulder demanding evidence.

The adversary loves to use an intrusive thought to launch a full blown shame spiral, whispering that because a dark or negative thought entered your head, you must be evil, contaminated, or a total failure. When that happens, I invite you to remember a powerful story from the New Testament.

A group of loud accusers once dragged a vulnerable woman directly before Jesus in the temple court, shouting out her sins and demanding a public condemnation. They tried to use her past mistakes to trap the Savior and completely humiliate her.

Jesus calmly bent down, rode in the dust on the ground and challenged those accusers until every single one of them was forced to drop their stones and walk away. He then looked at the woman with pure compassion and declared, neither do I condemn thee. Go and sin no more, my dear sister.

When dark, intrusive thoughts act like noisy accusers trying to condemn you, remember that Jesus is not throwing a stone at you. You can dismiss those false accusers or thoughts with the truth of God's word.

In First Corinthians 10:13, God promises, There hath no temptation taken you, but such as is common to man or woman.

But God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation of also make a way to escape that ye may be able to bear it. I like to simplify this verse and say God doesn't give you more than you can handle with his help.

God always provides a way of escape, and part of that escape is speaking the truth of who you are out loud. When a shame loop tries to start, declare your identity. I am a daughter of the Most High God. I am a being of light.

I am loved perfectly by my Jesus, who redeems and purifies me. I follow him, and I am His. When you stand firm in your worth, you stop feeding the shame loop.

But what do we do when an intrusive thought just won't go believe? Let's listen as Wendy teaches us how to flip the thought and cast it out in the name of Jesus Christ.

Wendi Christensen

00:07:26.480 - 00:09:15.200

Then question if I believe this thought, what's my outcome going to be? It's not going to take you to a good space. Okay, then flip it. Flipping it means if I think she hates me, could it be true that she doesn't hate me?

Could there be something going on in her life? Is there something else that could be happening for her? Maybe I should be more worried about her instead of more worried about me.

So you're going to question it and find out if it's really true or it's not true. If it keeps coming and you can't get it out, then it's definitely from Satan. And then you need to cast it out.

Do that by saying, in the name of Jesus Christ, I cast out this negative thought. Whether that be in this example she hates me, or that I'm no good, or that there's something wrong with me.

I'm going to cast that out and remember who I am. I am a true daughter of God that has good qualities, loves people and serves people so that you're changing the outcome.

If you're thinking that throwing the negative thought out and thinking, no, I'm a good friend, I'm good to people, I do wonderful things. It's got to be something is not right for her today, so I'm going to reach out more and make sure she's okay. You're going to have a better mindset.

Then you're going to feel some hope instead of depression. You're going to feel some I can do something instead of I'm helpless and everybody hates me. So those thoughts can have a real impact on your moods.

So if you want your mood to change, challenge the thought. Get rid of what's not serving you. Cast it out. Don't believe it, get rid of it.

And then you'll find that your moods will be much improved and in a much better space.

When you flip that thought and cast it out in the name of Jesus Christ, it is important to fill that space in your mind with light. For example, in Philippians4.8 we find several qualities we can add that fill us with light.

Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, just pure lovely of good report. If there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Don't give the adversary a seat at the table of your mind.

Throw out that lie. Claim your divine worth in Christ and focus your mind on what is good, lovely and true.
