Have you ever wondered exactly what are strongholds in spiritual warfare? When toxic loops of shame, fear, or unworthiness replay endlessly in your mind, it can feel like an invisible wall is locking you out of God's peace. You are not alone, and you are in the exact right place! In this episode of the Arise Women of God podcast, host Tamara K. Anderson is joined by ministry leader Amy Johnson to expose the deeply entrenched mental fortresses the adversary builds in our minds.
We dive into 2 Corinthians 10 to understand the apostle Paul's ancient military blueprint, revealing how the enemy constructs strongholds out of false arguments and custom lies. Amy vulnerably shares how the adversary targeted the "chinks in her armor" by planting lies in her marriage, and how naming those specific lies stripped the enemy of his secret control.
Discover how to put on the Helmet of Salvation to protect your thoughts and how to actively "boss your brain" using the Sword of the Spirit! By actively taking every thought captive and anchoring your mind in the absolute truth of Jesus Christ, you can pull down the highest, most fortified stone walls the enemy tries to build. Tune in to learn how to change your mental scenery and reclaim your peace today!
Episode Takeaways
- The Ancient Blueprint (2 Corinthians 10:4-5): Strongholds are deeply entrenched fortresses built inside our minds out of toxic thought patterns, fears, and false arguments designed to lock us away from God's truth.
- Identify the Chinks in Your Armor: The enemy uses custom lies targeted at your deepest vulnerabilities (like the lie of feeling capable but unlovable). Naming the specific lie out loud strips the adversary of his secret control over your reactions.
- Boss Your Brain: You do not have to pull up a chair and entertain every thought that enters your head. Use the Helmet of Salvation to actively protect your mind and change the mental scenery.
- Vain Imaginations Destroy Peace: When an intrusive lie hits, immediately attack it with the Sword of the Spirit (the Word of God). Post visual reminders of scripture around your home to reaffirm your true identity in Christ.

Hey, my friend, have you ever wondered what are strongholds in spiritual warfare?
Because maybe you like, I have wondered if the adversary has strongholds he uses, like loops of toxic thoughts, shame, or unworthiness, which feel like an invisible wall is locking you out of God's peace. This can be a challenging situation because you want to know how to break down these mental fortresses for good. Well, take heart, my friend.
You are in the right place.
And by the end of today's episode, you'll know not only what a stronghold is, but how to identify the enemy's chinks in your armor and how to boss your brain and how to pull down strongholds using the power of God. Stay tuned. Ordinary women, extraordinary faith. When God calls, we say yes. Hello, and welcome to the Arisen with God podcast.
I'm your host, Tamara K. Anderson, and joining me today is the amazing Amy Johnson. Amy is a wife, mom, grandma, and a busy women's ministry leader who has stood on the front lines of battling mental strongholds.
And she is here to share her deep and practical wisdom with us today as we talk about what are the strongholds in spiritual warfare. Here's our layout for today's episode.
First, we're going to talk about the ancient military blueprint, what Paul actually meant when he named strongholds in second Corinthians. Second, we're going to unmask the chinks in the armor.
Amy's going to share her vulnerable story of identifying the enemy's custom lies in her marriage and relationships.
Third, we're going to talk about bossing your brain with the sword, and we're going to give practical ways to change the mental scenery and pull down false arguments.
All right, my friends, let's start off by grounding ourselves in the foundational verse for this episode found in Second Corinthians, chapter 10, 4, 5, where the apostle Paul writes, for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God.
To the pulling down of strongholds, casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity and every thought to the obedience of Christ. To understand what Paul is saying here, we have to look at the ancient world.
In Paul's day, a stronghold was a massive, heavily fortified stone city or tower built high on a hill.
When an invading army attacked, soldiers would retreat inside these thick stone walls where they were completely set safe from the enemy's arrows and could launch counter strikes. Paul uses this military imagery to teach us that spiritual strongholds are deeply entrenched fortresses.
Often built inside our minds out of toxic thought patterns, maybe false arguments and lies. The enemy constructs these walls to trap you and me inside a loop of fear or unworthiness, making us feel complet, locked away from God's truth.
Let's listen as Amy shares how the adversary tried to build a personal stronghold around her mind and marriage.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, he does. He absolutely has strongholds.
And he knows my chinks in my armor when I am under severe attack and I don't recognize it, usually what happens is I can't breathe. It goes to my lungs very first. And so I absolutely. He has chinks.
Also, Wendy, who we know on this podcast a lot, Wende, she one day said to me, most people believe they're either lovable and incapable or capable and unlovable. And I was like, oh, I know which one I am. I'm absolutely capable. And he. And Satan has used that against me.
Not the capable so much, except the pride part, which is a whole other issue. But he uses the unlovable in my marriage all the time.
And so I often hear in my mind, he did that because he doesn't love you, referring to my husband. He did that because he doesn't love you. And now we have been so open with it. Now we've been married 32 and a half years. Yay, me. That was right?
32 And a half years. And now even this morning, my husband said something, and I was like, why are you leaving so early? And he goes, it's just because I don't love you.
And now we. Because we know that that's my weakness, right? That's my weak spot.
And I actually had to post affirmations and scriptures and things reminding me to not entertain that thought in my head.

Isn't it incredible how open Amy and her husband are now that they have identified that lie? When you name the stronghold, the enemy loses his power to secretly control your reactions. But you first just got to realize what it is.
And my friends, this isn't the first times God's people had to deal with deeply entrenched fortresses. We see this in the Old Testament during the siege of Jebus in 1st Chronicles 11, verses 4 through 7.
The Jebusites lived in a fortress so high and heavily fortified that they mocked King David, claiming he could never bear again.
But David didn't rely on human strength, and he relied on God's power, and he conquered the stronghold and turned that exact fortress into the city of David, which later was called Jerusalem. Oh, my friends, no matter how high or fortified a mental lie feels in your head today. It is not stronger than God.
But as Amy pointed out, to pull down those walls, we have to actively take and receive the armor of God and as well as the help that he offers us. God is an abundant benefactor.
But so often we leave his protection sitting on a shelf because we are busy trying to fix everything in our own strength. I know I'm guilty of it.
The blessing is when we receive his helmet of salvation, we gain the capacity to guard our mind and stop letting the enemy dictate our thoughts.
Let's head back to Amy as she breaks down how she uses the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit to boss her brain and change the mental scenery.

So wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day. And having done all to stand. And he talks about the helmet of salvation. That's a really powerful weapon for me.
That's a stronghold for me because I have to protect my brain and I have to boss my brain. And if you know me superficially, you don't really know that about me because I'm capable. See how this works?
So verse 17 and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.
So my stronghold is immediately to go to a scripture that I love, a quote that I love that reminds me that Satan uses vain imaginations to destroy my peace. And so I post it that same quote, same scripture, same, all the things that will remind me to go to my happy place.
Don't automatically assume that they're out to get. He's out to get me. And by the way, it's really bad with my husband, most other people. I don't love you that much. I don't think I. I try.
I love people, but you can't get in. That is the chink with my husband specifically, or my kids. And so I just know that you have to find your own helmet of salvation.
Maybe it's not your brain, maybe it's something else. Whatever it is, for most people, I find it's the things that replay over and over and over in our head. So for me, I changed. I changed the scenery.
Every time I think he doesn't love me and I'm at all serious. I think vain imaginations destroy your peace.

I love that phrase. Vain imaginations destroy your peace. Well, my friends, the moment a lie pops into your head, you don't have to pull up a chair and entertain it.
You can identify where the enemy's stronghold is in your mind, then you actively attack it with God's word, the Sword of the Spirit as an offensive weapon.
Having visual reminders, whether it's post it notes on your mirror, maybe a wallpaper on your phone, or cards posted on your refrigerator in your kitchen reaffirms the absolute truth of who you are in Jesus Christ. When you fill your mind with God's truth, there is simply no room left for the enemy's stone walls.
