Summary

Have you ever felt spiritually "tone-deaf"? It can be frustrating to hear other people talk about God telling them things while you are still waiting for a burning bush or an audible voice to shout your name. If you are asking, "How do you hear the voice of God?", you are not alone, and you are not being ignored! In this episode of the Arise, Women of God podcast, host Tamara K. Anderson brings together a panel of spiritual sisters—Wendi Christensen, Kari Anjewierden, Bonnie Randall, and Tiffany Fletcher—to explore the many divine dialects God uses to speak to us.

We break down the myth that God's voice is primarily an audible sound. Instead, we explore how He communicates through a symphony of methods: a sudden quiet thought or "knowing," a visual image, physical sensations like warmth or chills, heightened motherly intuition, and even early morning downloads or dreams. God is not limited to a single dialect because He is a loving Parent who wants to make sure you understand Him. If you are tired of guessing and want to move from hoping He speaks to confidently recognizing His whisper, tune in to discover the unique spiritual frequency that matches your ears!

Episode Takeaways

  • The Voice is Rarely Audible: Moses heard a burning bush, but for most of us, God speaks through a "still, small voice." It usually feels like a sudden thought or impression that wasn't there a second ago.
  • Identify Your Divine Dialect: God communicates differently with everyone. He might use visual images, physical sensations (like chills or a warm burning in the chest), or even early morning downloads at 3:00 AM.
  • The Peace Test: As Philippians 4:7 teaches, God's voice is almost always accompanied by a feeling of profound peace in your heart and mind, even when the world around you is chaotic.
  • Dreams vs. Intuition: God may speak to some through memorable, impactful dreams, while others might experience His voice as a heightened "motherly intuition" or a deep gut feeling that something is right.

Reflection Questions

  • When you pray, are you expecting an audible voice, or are you open to receiving a visual image, a physical sensation, or a sudden thought?
  • Think back to a time when you felt a sudden "knowing" or a deep sense of peace about a decision. How did that specifically feel in your body and mind?
  • Have you ever asked God to show you exactly which "divine dialect" is your unique gift of the Spirit?

Have you ever felt like you are spiritually tone deaf?

You hear other people talk about God telling them things, but you're still waiting for some burning bush like Moses or an audible voice to shout your name. Perhaps you're wondering, how do you hear the voice of God?

Because you're tired of guessing and you're worried that you're the only one that he's not talking to. We're going to dive into this today. You're in the right place.

And by the end of today's episode, you'll understand the many ways that God speaks to us through his spirit and identify perhaps one of the five divine dialects that matches your unique spiritual ears. We're going to help you solve the feeling of being ignored by heaven by showing you that God doesn't speak through one single way. He has a symphony.

We're moving from hoping he speaks speaks to recognizing his whisper. Stay tuned. Ordinary women, extraordinary faith.

When God calls, we say yes. Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Arise Women of God podcast.

I'm your host, Tamara K. Anderson, and today I've gathered a panel of spiritual sisters from our podcast archives to to show you just how different God's voice can look, sound, and feel. We'll hear from Carrie about internally just knowing. Wendy on visual pictures, Bonnie on physical signs, and Tiffany on the scriptural shortcut.

But first, let's start with a fundamental truth. God's voice is rarely a sound that you hear with your ears.

In the Bible, we see God speaking to Joseph through dreams, a still, small voice to Elijah, and even in a blinding light to Saul. And he can use all those methods today as well. But most often, he speaks through pockets of stillness.

In our modern lives, as we explore this, remember that hearing God is a skill that we kind of stumble through at first, like a toddler learning to walk before we learn to run alongside him. So, my friends, let's dive in.

Many of us are waiting for an audible sound, but for most people, the voice is actually more like an impression or a sudden thought that wasn't there a second ago. Carrie and Tiffany explain how this works for them.

Tiffany Fletcher

00:02:27.310 - 00:02:48.100

I think sometimes, yes, he can speak an auditory voice.

Moses heard him speak through the bush, but I think most of the time it's he speaking to us in a still, small voice in our thoughts, in our mind, and in our heart to help us know what he would have us do. And again, if it leads us to do good, then it is good. And I say do it when I.

Kari Anjewierden

00:02:48.100 - 00:03:26.790

Was a child, and people would say, you know, how does God speak to you? And I thought, I don't. I don't hear a voice. So if you're not hearing a voice, you're not alone. Most of us don't hear a voice.

It's not an audible voice. I have heard an audible voice maybe once or twice in my lifetime, but. But sometimes it's just a knowing.

Sometimes it's a quiet thought in my mind that I have come to realize just appeared as I was asking the question and wasn't something that I was already thinking. So it likely was not for me. It was likely from God.

Tamara K. Anderson

00:03:27.190 - 00:03:40.420

If you aren't a thoughts person, then you might be a visual or physical person. God often uses our bodies and our minds to confirm his truth. Watch how Wendy and Bonnie describe their reception process.

Wendi Christensen

00:03:41.300 - 00:04:03.650

And for me, it can be like an image that'll pop into my mind or a picture, because I'm more of a visual person.

And so sometimes when I'm really like, if I'm working with a person and I'm really just sitting and tuning into their energy and my energy and trying to hear things, it will be a thought or a phrase that will pop into my mind.

Bonnie Randall

00:04:04.130 - 00:04:45.520

Then God's joy, God's peace. And so then I pause and I say, what am I feeling? I'm feeling calm. I'm feeling comfort. I'm feeling.

I might feel kind of like this burning sensation, this warmth sensation in my chest. For me, that is God.

Another way I feel God is I will get chills, I'll get goosebumps, especially if I'm speaking truth and God wants to confirm that truth. My body speaks to me, so he speaks to me through my body in.

Tamara K. Anderson

00:04:45.520 - 00:06:33.680

That way, for me, come in heightened versions of motherly intuition, that gut feeling that tells you something is right or maybe wrong for your child. But I've also found that he loves to talk to me when the world is quiet, usually in the very early hours of the morning.

I love the verse in Philippians, chapter 4, verse 7, where God says, and the peace of God, because I think you can describe those feelings as a peace, right? Which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. And I love that it mentions the.

Two places that we kind of feel those answers from God. It's usually in our heart and in our mind.

And I love that it mentions peace, heart and mind, because those are the ways that I often feel answers or is a peaceful feeling in my mind or heart. Years ago, when I was doing different podcasts, I had a lady come on the show. And she just called it her God voice that she feels inside of her.

And I thought, ooh, I like that description sometimes. We called it perhaps a motherly intuition for us moms out there, you know, that I just knew I felt it.

And I think that's how my daughter describes it when I. When she is kind of growing into this principle of how does God speak to me?

She's a young adult, and as she's kind of grown into, she goes, I just feel it's right. And I'm like, there you go. You just feel it's right. Do you know what I mean? It feels right. You feel peace about it. Tiffany also receives revelation through dreams, and she's going to wrap it up with a final few thoughts.

Tiffany Fletcher

00:06:34.560 - 00:07:18.100

I absolutely believe that God can speak to us through dreams. And as a matter of fact, he speaks to me often through my dreams.

And he gives me pieces of advice or words of wisdom for me to ponder or even answers to my questions that I may be struggling with. But not all dreams are from Him. I don't, you know, every dream. If a dream is chaotic and strange, it's not from him.

Most likely it's my mind making things up. But I know that a dream is from God.

When I feel like I can remember the dream and it leaves an impression on me, like just an impression of Tiffany, pay attention to this dream.

Tamara K. Anderson

00:07:18.740 - 00:08:02.180

I'm not one that gets dreams from God. I will often wake up early. Like, I'll. He'll wake me up at like 3 or 4 in the morning and have a message for me.

And so it'll be like the first thing I hear or think of or is impressed on my heart or mind in those early morning hours. And I've gotten so many downloads then that I've come to know that's when he speaks to me.

So I can't really say that I've had a ton of dreams, but I have had dreams where Jesus has been there, just being there and loving me and stuff like that. And so those are precious to me.

Tiffany Fletcher

00:08:02.580 - 00:08:47.550

I think it's important to understand that dreams may not come to everyone. It may not be your gift of the Spirit. So don't feel bad if you don't have.

If God doesn't speak to you that way, it's just one of the many ways that he uses to speak to us. So if dreams isn't your gift of the spirit, ask Heavenly Father, what is? What is your gift of the Spirit and how does he speak to you?

And then use that to connect with Him. You don't have to have a dream to connect with God. And you're not. God doesn't love you less because you don't have a dream.

Because he doesn't send you a dream. He will send you the communication you need in the exact way you need it and when you need it.

Tamara K. Anderson

00:08:47.550 - 00:10:22.310

And so my friends, whether it's an image, a chill, a gut feeling, or a 3am download, God is speaking. And he isn't limited to a single dialect because he is a parent wants to make sure his child understands.

If you haven't heard him yet, it might just be that you're looking for a shout while he's offering a picture. Ask him to teach you how he speaks to you.
