Episode Takeaways

  • The Command to Pray Always: 1 Thessalonians commands us to "pray continually." This doesn't mean you have to constantly recite a formal "Dear Heavenly Father" prayer; it means keeping the line of silent, internal communication open to Him all day long.
  • The Airport Miracle: Kari shares how she navigated an impossible holiday travel situation using a string of silent prayers. She emphasizes the importance of remembering to say a silent "Thank you" after God helps you clear each hurdle.
  • The Diaper Wipe Prayer: Tamara had a silent, panicked prayer on her living room floor while trying to contain a massive baby blowout without any wipes. God answered her silent thought immediately. While wet wipes aren't eternally significant, God cares about them because He cares about you.
  • Abiding on the Road to Emmaus: Just as Jesus walked and talked with the disciples on the Road to Emmaus, He is willing to walk with you through your daily chores and commutes. Having a conversation with God in your head is simply inviting Him to "abide" with you.

Reflection Questions

  1. Do you ever feel guilty for not praying "formally" on your knees enough? How does the command to "pray always" give you permission to talk to God in your head?
  2. Have you ever faced an "impossible" hurdle (like Kari's airport story) where you had to rely entirely on silent, running prayers to get through the day?
  3. What is a "diaper wipe" situation in your life right now? Are you willing to ask God for help with something that feels too small or silly to pray about?
  4. Read the story of the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24). How can you invite Jesus to "abide" with you during your daily commute or chores today?

And today we're talking all about the accessibility of heaven. First, we're going to discuss the command to always pray and why a silent dialogue can be a scriptural requirement for protection.

Second, Carrie is going to share a Christmas miracle that happened at the airport and how a silent petition can help you navigate impossible hurdles in life.

Third, I'm going to share my diaper wipe analogy, proof that God is interested in the details of your life, even if they're not super important in the long run. And.

And finally, we're going to talk about the road to Emmaus, how Jesus is willing to walk and talk with us in our minds and in our hearts until we truly recognize Him. But let's kick it off by talking about what it means to pray always or keep a prayer in our heart.

Kari Anjewierden

00:02:14.880 - 00:03:20.160

Well, I know the power of praying out loud, but can I just say, if we can't pray silently, then I'm in trouble because I do it all the time, all day long. You know, just. I always find myself sending these little messages heavenward. I'm not always in a good space to just, you know, kneel down and pray.

So for me, I hope so. And the scriptures tell us that, right? That we need to be praying always so that we can be protected from temptations and. And other evils around us.

And I don't know about you, but I am always doing that. In the car.

I will kneel down and say a prayer at night. And then when I get in bed, I might remember a Few things that I forgot as I was kneeling down. And I'll start a dialogue in my head again.

I'm doing it all the time. It feels right to me. I, you know, and this. And like I said, the scriptures tell us that we should be doing that. Almost a command, right?

Tamara K. Anderson

00:03:20.720 - 00:03:44.800

It really is a command. In First Thessalonians, it tells us to pray continually.

And while that doesn't mean that every single thought has to be a formal, dear Heavenly Father, it does mean that that line of communication is always open to you. Carrie found this line to be a literal lifesaver when she was facing an impossible travel situation.

Kari Anjewierden

00:03:45.480 - 00:05:16.910

Couple of months ago, I was on a flight home. We were on a buddy pass flight. So it was around Christmas time.

Chances of us getting on a flight were not real great, but we needed to be home at a certain time. And I remember going into the airport with the idea of really what, what's in front of you is impossible.

So I guess anytime you feel like what you're facing is impossible, those are the perfect times to seek out God and, and to speak to Him. And I was praying all through the airport, help us to get through security seamlessly, right?

And then I try to remind myself as I'm coming out of security, oh,. Thank you, Heavenly Father, for helping me. Get through security the way that we did. Now can you help me with the next hurdle?

But trying to remember every time to. Go back and say thank you for.

What he is doing along the way. And I don't always remember and I'm not always perfect at that.

But again, anything that's impossible, anything that is hopeless, anytime you feel alone, those are the times. Especially in those moments. He's a parent, he wants to help us, right? What parent doesn't want to help their. Child solve their stress?

Tamara K. Anderson

00:05:17.790 - 00:08:27.740

Isn't it great to know that God wants to help us with the big stressors like travel, but he is also there for the messy moments that feel almost too small to mention.

But what if what I'm worried about is something that is way too small for God to be worried about? It's nothing big, it's nothing important.

And I'm going to take you back to a very young mom, Tamara, who was on the floor of her living room and my first baby had this blowout poopy diaper. And I was sitting there and I'm like, okay, I've got the diaper, I've got the pad to put them on.

And I'm looking around for the wipes and I know this is where I change them all the time and they were nowhere to be seen.

And I start looking everywhere. I was trying to hold my child so, you know, the poop wouldn't get everywhere in the living room.

And I'm like, dear Lord, you know, and this is one of those silent prayers.

I can't find the wipes, I can't see them, I can't find him, but I really need help because I don't know what else to do, you know, it was kind of one of those panic mom prayers in the moment for wipes, you guys. For me, it was super, super important at the moment. Pause and think. In the eternal scheme of things. Are wet wipes that important to God?

Probably not. But because it was important to me,. I got a quick thought, look under the couch. I'm like, I picked up the fabric.

That was covering the bottom of the couch. Sure enough, they were right there. And I remember it was just one of those epiphanies that God cares about the little things that matter to us.

And I was thankful to learn that,. That I could talk to him in. My head in a moment of panic. And he answered, and I'm so thankful for that.

Oh, ladies, nothing is too small for God. He is as close as your next thought. As Carrie and I were discussing, that mental conversation isn't just for asking for things. It's about abiding with him. Just like the disciples did on that road to Emmaus.

The story of the men on the road to Emmaus popped into my mind. I love that story because they were walking and talking with Jesus. They didn't recognize Him.

They get to the town and he was going to go farther or acted like he was going to go farther. And they invited him in to abide with them. And as they did, and he broke bread, then they finally recognized who he was.

But I love that image of Jesus walking with us. He's willing to walk with us and talk with us. And I love the thought of him abiding with us.

And I think that's a beautiful invitation that we can make at the beginning and at the end and in the. Middle of every day. Lord, abide with me today.

Kari Anjewierden

00:08:30.140 - 00:09:32.300

I love that. I think that just abide with him.

As much as we want him to abide with us. And, and I think that would be the reason why we would talk to God in our head, is that we want that continual walk with Him.

And it is a continual conversation, right? It's not just a, a one way conversation.

It's two ways to being open to speaking to him in the hard things and the the things that we are excited about or anything, right? But creating that continual walk with God. One last thing, I just wanted to share this quote from Brother Lawrence who. Is a 17th century monk and he. Said he does not ask much of.

Us, merely a thought of him from time to time. A little adoration, sometimes to ask his grace, sometimes to offer him your sufferings and sometimes to return him thanks.

Tamara K. Anderson

00:09:32.620 - 00:10:36.690

A thought from time to time. Isn't that great that that is what God wants from us. That is all he asks. You are never alone because God is as close as your next thought.

Whether you're praying for a way home from an airport or just a way to clean up the mess in the living room. I can testify that your prayers are heard and that they are honored. You can speak to God in your head and and he does listen because he loves you.
