How to Get a Yes or No Answer From God
Apr 22, 2026Summary
Have you ever stood at a major crossroads in life—perhaps deciding on a job, a move, or a relationship—and pleaded with God for clear direction? If you are tired of the ambiguity and find yourself asking, "How do I get a yes or a no answer from God?", you are in the right place. In this episode of the Arise, Women of God podcast, host Tamara K. Anderson and guest Bonnie Randall tackle the heavy burden of spiritual indecision.
We break down why God often starts with simple, short answers instead of full paragraphs of direction, and how to verify those answers through "prayer experiments." We also expose the "adversary’s echo"—explaining why the first voice you hear is almost always the Spirit, while the second voice of doubt is actually the enemy trying to throw you off track. Listen in as Tamara shares a powerful story of helping her son double-check a confusing answer about a job offer, proving that sometimes a "no" is actually God's loving protection. If you want to learn how to spot the unique physical and mental signals God uses specifically for you, tune in to this episode and start calibrating your spiritual frequency today!
Episode Takeaways
- Start with Simple Questions: God usually starts by answering with a simple "yes" or "no" to build your trust before giving you a full paragraph of instruction. Make a decision first, and then ask Him to confirm it.
- The First Voice Principle: When seeking an answer, the first voice or feeling you receive is from God. The second voice that immediately follows with doubt or confusion is the adversary.
- Verify the "No": If you feel confused or unsettled about a decision, that is often a "no." You can verify this by asking God the question in reverse: "God, I feel like this is a no. Is that right?" The resulting peace will confirm the answer.
- Recognize Your Pattern: Keep practicing your prayer experiments. Over time, you will start to see a pattern in how God speaks to you—whether through chills, sudden thoughts, or specific scriptures.

Reflection Questions
- When making a big decision, do you usually expect God to tell you exactly what to do, or do you make a choice first and ask Him for a yes or no confirmation?
- Have you ever experienced the "adversary's echo," where a clear, positive answer was immediately followed by a wave of doubt?
- What specific physical or mental signals (like a feeling of warmth, chills, or sudden clarity) usually accompany a "yes" answer for you?

Have you ever stood at a crossroads in your life, maybe about a job, a move, or a relationship, and just pleaded with God for a clear word answer? Perhaps you're asking, how do I get a yes or a no answer from God?
Because you're tired of the ambiguity and you want to move forward, but you're paralyzed by the fear that you might mistake your own desires for God's will. Well, take heart, my friend. You're in the right place.
By the end of today's episode, you will understand the first voice principle and how to identify the subtle, peaceful ping God uses to answer your most direct questions. We're going to help you solve the pain of indecision by giving you a simple prayer experiment to help you calibrate your spiritual ears.
We're moving from I hope I'm right to I know he answered. Ordinary women, extraordinary faith. When God calls, we say yes. Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Arise Women of God podcast.
I'm your host, Tamara K. Anderson. And joining me today is the amazing and unforgettable Bonnie Randall, who is a fantastic woman warrior of light.
And we are diving into discerning the language of the Spirit, how God speaks to you. As we read in Psalm 32, verse 8, God says, I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go. I will counsel thee with mine eye.
God wants to guide us, but we have to learn to hear and recognize his counsel. So first, we're going to talk about prayer experiments. Why God usually starts with a simple yes or no answer before giving you an entire paragraph.
Second, we're going to expose the adversary's echo, how to identify the first voice, and why the second voice of doubt is often a confirmation of the first. Third, I'll share a personal story of how my son and I worked together to verify what a no felt like for him.
And finally, we'll talk about pattern recognition, how to spot the unique physical and mental signals God uses specifically for you. But first, Bonnie's going to kick us off by sharing a simple experiment.

How God oftentimes starts speaking to people. Because this no and this yes is such a simple word. It's two letters and three letters.
And oftentimes, when we start our process of learning how to hear how God speaks to us and answers prayers, it starts out very simple. In some podcast episodes, you may hear stories from me or other people who have said, God said this, and it's this whole big paragraph, Right? Right.
That is not normal. Okay? That takes practice. It takes learning how God speaks to you and cluing into him to start having those kind of conversations.
But oftentimes, when you start your prayer experiments with him, the promptings come in very simple, short, peaceful impressions. Promptings, images, memories, A scripture verse may come to you.

Isn't it crazy that we often want the whole download, but God usually gives us a direct signal that we need to take the next step? I've also noticed that sometimes God expects me to decide first and then he can give me a simple yes or no answer to what I've decided.
If you want a simple answer, ask a simple question. I've decided this is what I want to do. Is it right? However, sometimes, once that signal comes, a counter signal sometimes comes almost immediately.
Bonnie has noticed that the sequence of those voices is actually a clue to their source.

And then when you start asking him no or yes, that is a really important question because you can say, heavenly Father, I'm asking for this. Should I do it? I feel good about it. Do I have your blessing? And then you pause and you will hear either a yes or a no.
And what's really cool is God is always the first voice. So if you hear a yes immediately followed up by a no, it was the yes. I think about how in the Bible, God is always mentioned first.
It's always God and then Satan. When we are in that prayer, God wants to speak to you. He wants you to understand what he is saying.
But the adversary, the enemy, also wants to throw you off track. And so he is going to come right on the heels of those answers.
So as you are praying and as you are starting to experiment with prayer and hearing how God speaks to you, notice what comes to you first. And notice where that leads you in the train of thought.

The enemy loves to come right on the heels of an answer to throw you off. But once you learn to catch that first voice and act on it, you start distinguishing better the yeses from the no's.
I had the opportunity a couple years ago to help my young adult son discern between a yes and no answer from God. So at this point in my son's life, he had been looking for a job for a while.
He'd done some temporary work, but was really looking for a job that was a good fit for him. And he'd been doing a whole bunch of interviews. And finally he got this job offer. And he was so excited.
I mean, we had been praying and praying for this, and I said, that is so great. Why don't you go and pray about it? And so he disappears Downstairs to his room.
And a little bit later, he comes up and he says, mom, I'm having a hard time figuring out if I'm supposed to take this job or not. And I said, okay. He said, will you pray with me? And I said, absolutely. So we knelt down here in my office, and I let him say the prayer.
And I could immediately feel that even though I wanted this to be a yes, I was getting a no. It just didn't feel right. It wasn't the positive happy yes. And I waited for him to open his eyes at the end, and I said, how are you feeling?
He's like, yes, no, I don't know. I said, you're feeling confused, aren't you? And he said, yeah, I kind of am. I said, that is a no. And he's like, oh, really? I said, huh?
I said, but let's verify it. I said, now let's ask God the question in reverse. God, we're feeling like this is a no, that I shouldn't take this job, even though I really want to.
Is that the right answer? And so he offered that prayer. And all of a sudden, this sweet, tender feeling came flooding into my heart and into his.
And afterwards, we were discussing it. I'm like, could you feel the difference? And he said, yeah, I really could. And it's nice that you can double check it with God.
You can feel a no, and then you can feel a yes when you're confirming, hey, did I hear that right? You can feel yes. Oh, that's so good to know, right? So, my friends, receiving a no wasn't a rejection from God.
My son later got a fantastic job that has fit him just perfectly. And for him, he just needed to wait a little bit longer and hold out for the best job for him.
That no was a sign that God actually cared about my son and his decision and his life. And as you keep practicing this, you'll start to recognize a specific pattern emerge on how your body and mind respond to heaven's answers.

And keep asking questions and keep noticing how they're simple answers in the beginning. And as you ask those questions, you will notice the feelings that come to you.
You will notice the things, the promptings, the images, all those things that start coming, and you will start to see a pattern. A pattern will emerge. And you will say, oh, this is how God speaks to me. I can feel it when I get chills. That's how he speaks to me.
When I stop my prayer and I open my scriptures and a verse pops up. That's how he speaks to me, but I promise you, he does speak to you.

So, my friends, God wants you to understand what he is saying. Whether he's using a chill, a sudden memory, or a simple yes or no on your heart, he is a parent who wants his children to find their way home.
Don't let that second voice of doubt still the clarity of the first. And if you're ready to start your own revelation experiment and document the patterns Bonnie and I discuss, have the perfect tool for you.
