Episode Takeaways

  • The Rent Veil: When Jesus died, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51). Anciently, this veil was the barrier to the presence of God. Because of Christ, that barrier is gone. You do not need a middleman; you have direct access to God.
  • Resume vs. Heart: Wendi breaks down Luke 18 (The Pharisee and the Tax Collector). The Pharisee brought a religious resume to prove his worth, but the tax collector brought a humble, broken heart. God justified the man with the humble heart. God doesn't want your performance; He wants your authenticity.
  • The Specific Mother's Prayer: It is okay to pray for highly specific things! Wendi shares a story of praying that her struggling son would just get one hit during his baseball game. He got a hit (even though he was ultimately tagged out), proving that God hears and answers the specific aching of a mother's heart.
  • Ask Him to Show His Work: If you feel like God isn't answering your prayers, it might just be because He isn't answering them the way you think He should. Pray: "Lord, help me to recognize when You are answering me. Give me the eyes to see how You are showing up."

Reflection Questions

  1. Do you ever feel like you need to "dress up" your prayers or present a perfect religious resume to God before He will listen to you?
  2. Read Hebrews 4:16. How does knowing the veil to the Holy of Holies was torn in half change your confidence in approaching the "throne of grace"?
  3. Think about Wendi's baseball story. What is a highly specific, small "mother's prayer" you can take to God today?
  4. How often do you miss God's answers because they don't look exactly like you expected? Are you willing to ask Him to "give you eyes to see" His work today?

Have you ever felt like there is a wall between you and heaven? Maybe you feel like you need a middleman, a priest, or a more spiritual spouse, or even a perfectly clean record just to get a word in with God.

Perhaps you're asking, how do I talk to God? Directly, because you are craving an intimacy with God, but you feel disqualified by your own unworthiness. Take heart, my friend.

By the end of today's episode, you will understand why the barrier between you and heaven has already been removed and how to approach the throne of grace with a raw, humble heart. We're going to help you move from being an outsider in your own faith by showing you how to find a direct line with the Savior.

We're moving from simple theology to an intimacy with God. Stay tuned. Ordinary women, extraordinary faith. When God calls, we say yes. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Arise Women of God podcast.

I'm your host, Tamara K. Anderson, and joining me today is the amazing Wendi Christensen. She happens to be my co founder in Women warriors of Light and is an amazing Christian counselor.

And today we are exploring how you have a VIP pass to talk to God. First, we're going to discuss the rent veil, both the historical and the spiritual moment that proves God is now open to you.

Second, Wendi is going to discuss the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, a masterclass in why God prefers a humble heart over a religious resume. And third, we're going to look at a real mom prayer and why specifically praying is key to seeing God's hand.

And finally, we'll share how to ask God to show his work so you can recognize his answers, even when they're different than what you had expected. But first, let's kick it off by talking about how the partition between you and and heaven has actually been removed.

If you read in Matthew, it talks about when Jesus Christ died. Matthew 27:51 says, and behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from top to bottom, and the earth did quake and the rocks rent.

And what I love about this is that the veil in the temple is anciently was the partition to enter the holy of holies, which was the presence of God.

And when Jesus Christ finished his work, that veil was literally ripped, meaning that you and I and every single one of us can now access God directly. And so if you're wondering, is there a barrier there? No.

You can talk to God directly in the name of Jesus Christ and you can tap into him and share your burdens and be able to come. What is the scripture Hebrews 4:16.

Therefore, let us come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. There you have it, my friends. The veil is gone. You have direct access to the throne because of Jesus Christ.

But sometimes, even when that door is wide open, we feel like we might need to dress up our prayers a little bit to be worthy of walking through. Wendy found a story in Luke that completely flips this idea on its head.

Well, it made me think of a story. It's in the New Testament. It's in Luke 18, and there's just four verses. Verses 10 through 14.

It says two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. And Pharisees were, you know, they were the experts in religion and prayer.

And think of them as a pastor or bishop or, you know, something that is the head of a head of their religion. The Pharisees stood by himself and prayed. So it's kind of an official, formal prayer.

God, I thank you that I am not like the other people, the robbers, the evildoers, the adulterers, or even like this tax collector right here, right? So this poor tax collector is being pointed out. I fast twice a week and I give a tenth of all I get. But the tax collector stood at a distance.

He would not even look up to heaven and beat his breast and said, God, have mercy on me, a sinner. I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.

For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. I love that he kind of like holds his heart and is like, please just have mercy on me. And to me, that's a prayer of the heart.

Whereas the other man was like, well, look what I'm all, look what I'm doing. I'm doing this and I'm doing this. I'm paying my tithing. I'm not like all these evildoers out here. I'm better.

And really has to prove himself almost to God and prove his worth and value to the people and to those around him and to God. Whereas the man who maybe didn't have the best, you know, a tax collector was really frowned upon. People didn't really love people like that.

But he had a prayer in his heart where he was like, I know I'm imperfect and I know I'm not as good, but here's my heart. And Christ says in the story and sharing this story that one was Justified before God.

Like God saw his heart and saw that he had a good heart and where he was, and that was enough.

Oh, isn't that fantastic? God wants our heart, not our resume. And when we bring that sincere heart to him, we can be incredibly specific.

Wendy is now going to share a story of how she put this to the test.

Wendi Christensen

00:06:24.970 - 00:07:29.740

Just yesterday, like, yesterday I gave a prayer like it was a mother's prayer. I'm watching my kid in his game. I'm just like, please, Heavenly Father, please help him to just have one small success.

And I pray specifically for that success. Like, help him to at least get this hit. He was playing baseball and I could just see his desire.

I mean, he's worked so hard and isn't getting very far. So my. I was like, please just hear this mother's heart's prayer right now. Just help him. And sure enough, he got a hit.

It was caught and he was out, but I was like, he got a hit. So maybe it wasn't answered in the way I wanted, but yet it was. He heard my prayer.

He heard this small little mom's prayer that had an aching in her heart for this son. But God saw it. He recognized it. And I feel like he does that with each and every one of us.

He may not answer it in the way you want, or it may not be this huge miracle, but he sees you and he hears you. And just maybe open your eyes to how it could be answered. Even if it's a little different than the outcome you're wanting or expecting.

Tamara K. Anderson

00:07:30.220 - 00:09:52.510

Isn't it great to know that God hears every mother's aching heart? But if you're wondering if he really is answering you, sometimes you just have to ask him to point it out.

If you're not sure if you're really talking to him and that he's really hearing and answering you, just ask him. Help me to recognize when you are answering.

Because sometimes I think in our brain, he's not answering unless he answers the way we think it should be answered, you know? And so ask him to show you where he is showing up in your life. Give me the eyes to see how you are present with me in my journey.

And thank him when you see those things. Because once you start down that path, you'll start seeing his hand in so many little things. It's incredible. So talk to him directly.

Learn to see his answers directly and feel his love. He loves you. You are his child. And he feels so thankful for your desires to commune with him and will reward you for your humble seeking of Him.

So my friends, the veil is ripped, the door is open and your Father is waiting to hear from you. You don't need a middleman, you just need a humble heart and the courage to speak.
